The Betty Poole House, 1958

6699 Mohawk Drive, Chanhassen, MN, 55317

The Betty Poole House, a timeless modern residence designed by Ralph Rapson, stands above Lotus Lake in Chanhassen. The house, which has been meticulously maintained and curated by its current owners, retains the hallmarks of Rapson's original design. The streamlined, one-story house features window walls in nearly every room. The walls of glass provide expansive views of the lake from the entry, living room, family room, and kitchen. Rapson's choice of materials—white painted brick, round skylights, and steel I-beams that frame the fireplace–lend an industrial aesthetic to the house. Generous expanses of glass, partial height walls, and a see-through fireplace that serves as a divider between the living and dining rooms, contribute to the openness and easy flow of spaces in the house. The core of the structure is a light-filled gallery with stunning black terrazzo floors that link the entryway, dining room, and library. Modern details prevail in the house, including pocket and ceiling-height doors, flush-panel kitchen cabinets and built-ins, an original built-in stainless steel wall oven, and a sunken bathtub with original tile. A similar modern aesthetic shapes the landscaped site. A gray trap rock driveway leads from the public road to the two-car garage. A walkway, composed of floating pavers, continues to the recessed courtyard entry of the house in which a stately oak stands. White brick walls give definition—and privacy–to the front yard. On the lakeside, a patio, accessed via sliding glass doors, provides an outdoor entertainment area. This is a rare opportunity to own a pristine Rapson-designed residence. A complete set of blueprints of the original design convey with the house.
