Located in the Poppy Peak Historic District, Robert E. Bond’s progressive, forward-thinking design exemplifies the Modernist aesthetic of breaking free from traditional, conservative architecture that dominated the American landscape prior to WWII. Sited midway through the San Rafael Hills in Pasadena, Bond’s abundant use of glass walls diminishes the physical separation between the interior and out of doors. Bond’s use of vertical overlapping board and batten planks add volume to the high, angled roofline which seamlessly blends into the hillside. Functional extensions of the vertical and horizontal lines of the house – such as railings and the balcony off of the master bedroom – are incorporated with the overall design, subsequently creating a unifying relationship with the house, owner and environment.
