The 10 unit Avenel Housing Project designed in 1947 by Gregory Ain of Ain, Johnson and Day, carefully uses the sites gentle slope to create private living spaces as well as individual walled gardens with an outlook to the surrounding hillside landscape. Architect Michael Folonis has redone this unit, not seeking to put his stamp on the design, but rather to reflect Ain’s philosophy with contemporary cabinetry and surfaces in keeping with the International Style. Gregory Ain’s ingenious vision and flexibility is exemplified by his use of mobile sliding walls, which open one room to the living space, and the other two additional bedrooms opening to one if desired. Residence includes: 2 bedrooms plus convertible den, open plan, living/dining area, laundry, terrace garden and single garage with additional parking space. Ivanhoe school district.
