Marc Held, Architect

L’Utopie, 1974-1978

(private address), Gif-sur-Yvette, Essonne, FR, 91

This incredible steel architecture was built above a beautiful pond by French architect-designer Marc Held between 1974 and 1978. It is located on the banks of a river near Gif-sur-Yvette, 30 minutes from Paris by car. The house extends over a surface of 360 m². It includes a large living room with fireplace, open kitchen and greenhouse under a 6.4 meters high ceiling, 5 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, a large mezzanine office, a circular library under a glass dome and 5 outdoor terraces as well as an additional guest house of 110m². On stilts over a pond and lost in lush bamboo and reed vegetation, the house is part of a magnificent property of 21.700m² protected natural area. It is made of corten steel, a type of self-patinated steel with forced surface corrosion generally used in construction for its appearance and its excellent resistance to rough atmospheric conditions. Its interior spaces, in addition to an impressive ceiling height with an apparent three-dimensional metal structure, are flooded with light thanks to the immense bay windows overlooking the vegetation.
