Marshall P. Wilkinson, Architect (attributed)

H. D. Howell Residence, 1912

7529 Franklin Ave, Los Angeles, CA, 90046

At the advent of Hollywood’s “Golden Age,” this grand Neoclassical design attributed to architect Marshall P. Wilkinson, was welcoming its first guests just after the turn of the 20th Century. One of the earliest designs in the Las Colinas Heights Historic District and immediately adjacent to Wattles Mansion and Gardens, the property retains many of its original historic elements including its symmetry of form. The opulent living room is punctuated with dentil and dart and egg moldings, and twin pocket doors step up to both den with original ornate fireplace, and formal dining room accented with a hand painted mural. A sitting room, guest bedroom and bath, round out the first level. Upstairs, a large master suite, two additional bedrooms and baths, and a separate sunroom overlooks the pool, seating areas, guest house w/gym and gardens. The property’s front exterior had a starring roll in the opening credits of the classic film Rebel Without a Cause.
